Thanks for the reply but I am still not getting any response from geoserver 
regarding the update of my native JAI on linux ubuntu server.

I have set the JAVA_HOME variable successfully ...at least when I  run 
"printenv" it shows the correct path to the directory...but this could be just 
confined to my shell. 

Then I restarted tomcat6, but geoserver is still stating "Sun Microsystems 
Inc.: 1.6.0_20 (OpenJDK Server VM)"

So the question is, where is this defined? Do I have to redefine the JAVA_HOME 
somewhere else in tomcat6?
