Robert,

because I've just done it I can give you the ultimative answer (bloody
reorganisations, needed your question so that I finally did it):

1 Safety copy of your data directory.

2 Create new namespace, which will create a workspace.xml and a
namespace.xml with their ids. They are important for you. Don’t delete the
old namespace for the time being even if you don’t need it.

3 Shut geoserver down

4 Move complete datastore(s) from workspaces/old to workspaces/new (don’t
copy)

5 Global exchange in workspaces/new from:
<id>NamespaceInfoImpl—xxxxxxxxcx_old_id:-xxxx</id> to
<id>NamespaceInfoImpl-- xxxxxxxxcx_new_id:-xxxx</id>
which you find in the old and new namespace.xml

6 Go to your datastores and exchange (these are probably only a few in
your
datastore.xml’s, so you might do this manually ) :
<id>WorkspaceInfoImpl-- xxxxxxxxcx_old_id:-xxxx</id> to
<id>WorkspaceInfoImpl-- xxxxxxxxcx_new_id:-xxxx</id>
which you find in your old and new workspace.xml

7 datastore.xml or xml's change the <namespace> to the new namespace if
the
namespace has a new URI:

……..
<entry key="namespace">http://dse.vic.gov.au</entry>
………

8 Restart and be merry

Cheers

Christian
