It is a GS specific extension and works only if you have loaded the rasters
as a image mosaic,
the mosic index contains the name and spatial location of each tile, but it
can be extended
to have extra informations attached to it, like time or elevation of that
granule (that's how
we handle time and elevation for rasters in GeoServer)
