This is actually the way to go, but you have to inner tile it, and add
overviews
(and you need a recent version of GeoServer to read the resulting bigtiff).

About the black border, I believe only the current GeoServer trunk (what
will become
2.4.0 in Septembre/October) can reproject
raster with NODATA without causing black borders, but I may be wrong.
