Ciao mark,
can you access the logs and check if there are any obvious errors?

I installed the bin locally on my Win box and I can find those files here:

- C:\Users\User\Downloads\geoserver-2.2-SNAPSHOT\data_dir\logs  this
contains a file called geoserver.log that contains the log of
geoserver itself
- C:\Users\User\Downloads\geoserver-2.2-ENTERPRISE-SNAPSHOT\logs this
contains the log of the embedded servlet container (jetty)

Notice that IMHO I would recommend using Tomcat together with the WAR
install of GeoServer, especially for production usage.
