Finally figured it out, had to open the port in the router. Forgot that I shut
most things down when I set up the VPN.

No, I cannot access it that way either. I suspect a permission issue, but I am
not sure where geoserver/web/ points to on the server

Can you access it via http://your.ip.address.here:8080/geoserver/web ?
