You might have quite an old version of GeoServer. Can you please find 
the GeoServer WEB-INF/lib directory and send us a list of the jar  files 
it contains? It should be in webapps directory of your servlet container 
(e.g. Tomcat). This will help us identify the version of GeoServer. If 
there is a file main-X.Y.Z.jar, then the version is GeoServer X.Y.Z.
