Thanks for the information, that’s interesting and not something I knew; I
tried the monitoring extension quite a while ago but don’t recall an audit
mode; in fact I’m sure it wasn’t as comprehensive in function last time I
looked, but that was 2 years ago.
Unfortunately I don’t have a GeoServer install to play with any more, I don’t
suppose you happen to have any sample logs to hand that you can send me so I
could try parsing them in my logging thing (I see in the docs they’re XML! :-S
)?

It depends what you’re using by way of the servlet container (i.e. Jetty,
Tomcat etc.), and what the logging level is at. GeoServer itself doesn’t keep
that sort of logs.
User logging may happen at that level (although it typically requires going
through the servlet security component, which I don’t think GeoServer does by
standard).
