Ok, an update. Microsoft issued an update
https://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2992611<http://www.decerno.se/> that solves
the problem. After applying this patch Geoserver is again able to connect to
sql server.
I also updated the sql driver and all seems to be working fine.

I just changed the pom to reference the latest MS jar. Ive started on the jtds
driver but got side tracked. Ill see if i can finish something today.

Hum... as far as I know the Microsoft driver is not on the repositories and we
cannot redistribute it... or are you talking about a switch to JTDS?
