Hi
Writing own apps using Javascript and Openlayers is not the easiest way to go,
but surely worth of an effort. I was not familiar with Javascript at all, when
I began. I had mostly programmed with Visual Basic.
However I started from the ground looking at other's code and Openlayers
examples. Slowly I started to get results, and now I can even program WFS-T
apps using Javascript, Openlayers and even HTML5.
Using different projections may be tricky sometimes, but 900913 with 4326 is
quite easy. Keep on trying. It is a rewarding process!

Actually, I tested by using this time a wms vector layer as a basemap , and
defining the appopriate parameters (center..). The wms overlay layer displays
on this basemap perfectly (No pink tiles).
I did post on the other mailing-lists.
At this point I'd like to define OSM or Google maps as a basemap, and see how
it goes . The problem is that it would use map projection of EPSG:3857
(900913). But I'm working with EPSG: 4326.

I believe this proves the problem is not GeoServer, since you verified
that you can see the WMS layer OK with the code I provided.
There is probably a bug elsewhere in your JS code, or maybe in
OpenLayers / GeoExt. If you are confident that your code is correct, you
could try to post a question on OpenLayers' / GeoExt's user lists.

My guess is you're calling OpenLayers.Bounds.fromArray function (either
directly or indirectly) and passing it a null bbox parameter.
