I noticed this question in gis.stackexchange

It seems that virtual services do not handle layer groups very well. For
example I suppose to see only one layer "bugsites" in GetCapabilities with:
http://localhost:8080/geoserver/sf/bugsites/wms?service=wms&version=1.3.0&request=GetCapabilities
However, also all the layers groups "spearfish", "Tasmania", and "tiger-ny"
are included.
I also tried to test the situation of the stackexchange question by connecting
"spearfish" group into "sf" workspace. Request
http://localhost:8080/geoserver/sf/spearfish/wms?service=wms&version=1.3.0&request=GetCapabilities
gives HTTP 404 error:
Problem accessing /geoserver/sf/spearfish/wms. Reason:
Not Found
