I believe this pull request should solve both:
https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/pull/1539
Unfortunately the release delay and spring-4 upgrade related freeze put us
in a weird situation where normal rules
do not apply anymore, and it's not clear if such a change is suitable for a
freeze
or not.
I prefer to err on the side of caution and not merge it since it could have
unforeseen side effects,
others are getting changes in regardless... it's the wild west... hopefully
it's going to end soon
