I finally have access to the code, as far as I can see the only way to get
that particular error
message it to have disallowed the openlayers format in the WMS settings,
either the global
ones, or the ones that are specific to the workspace.
E.g. something like this, with the openlayers format in the "available"
column instead of the "allowed" one:

If you are still in doubt, check the geoserver logs for the full strack
trace associated to that
error (just run a preview request, it should be the last long trace you see
in the logs) and share
it back to the list.
