Hi Henning, no, this is new to me, we actually have one demo server using a 2.9.x series deploying CSW and starting without problems here: http://demo.geo-solutions.it/geoserver/web/
The server deploys once a day the current nightly build, and did not exhibit any startup problem around the time 2.9.1 was released (a release is pretty much the same as a nightly, minus the installers that make it easier to setup). Can you check the GeoServer logs and see if you can find significant (or any) stack traces?
