What I have done so far is to make three time-enabled layers (for rain, snow, and mixed/ice), and made a layer group out of them. How hard would it be to time-enable a layer group? All three layers have exactly the same times available.

If you want to be able to style each band separately from the tiff file, you can do it with two different styles doing a channel selection before the colormap.
