Hi all,
I would update my geoserver version from 2.3.2 up to 2.91 (stable release).
I read the doc proposed in the website:

The general GeoServer upgrade process is as follows: Back up the current data
directory. This can involve simply copying the directory to an additional place.
I see not special precaution have to be taken. The only recommendation is to
backup the data dir, which is already an external one.
Have you other hints? or just remove the old version, upload the new version,
restart tomcat and reconfigure to the same external data dir?
