Hi Andrea,
At this stage I know nothing about GeoServer besides it’s name so the
optimisation is not my immediate problem.
I was asked to scope out the use of GeoServer to improve “performance” over our
current setup. At the moment we are using FalconView to display maps (sub set
100GB on the laptop SSD of 2TB on the NAS). The laptop is a mobile workstation
run i7 quad core so it is quite fast.
As you said it depends on too many aspects, but I immediate question is would
the NAS running GeoServer can out-pace the maps store on local SSD. Note: NAS
operation is very low CPU/RAM consumption. Normally humming along 10% or so.
How big are your data, how well optimized the data sources, how heavy the
stiles, if you’re using tile caching or not
.ecw files ranging from 5MB to 850MB .
I guess they are optimized, we have a few people dedicate for map and Topo
No idea about how heavy the stiles
Tile caching YES

Subject: Re: [Geoserver-users] Geoserver hardware requirement
Hi,
there is really no such a thing as a general set of indications for hardware
requirements, it depends too much
on how big are your data, how well optimized the data sources, how heavy the
stiles, if you're using tile caching or not...
Let's put it this way, if you check around with a search engine the are
presentations about running GeoServer on
a Raspberry Pi, so that's doable, even if quite slow.
The CPU you're mentioning does not seem so bad, but I guess the NAS runs mostly
on it so it will be kept busy by other activities too:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Embedded+R-Series+RX-421BD&id=2655
Also check carefully this presentation, it's meant for larger production
environments, but I guess that running on
limited hardware makes optimizations even more important:

Hope this help
Cheers
Andrea

Hi
What is the bare minimum hardware to run geoserver ? I am planning to run it on
a Linux NAS, either native or as a Docker.
This NAS has 8G RAM running AMD R-Series RX-421BD Quad-core 2.1 GHz processor
This NAS will be serve a local net of 4-8 laptops
Thanks
