I've never tried it before, but I just ran through the LDAP tutorial at https://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/security/tutorials/ldap/index.html (which uses the "acme-ldap" test code), and it worked fine (modulo a few little things that are changed in the UI, which I'll try to get fixed at some stage).
To help reproduce the problem, can you say if that tutorial works for you? If the tutorial works, and the same process doesn't work with your AD instance, can you say which specific version of AD you have deployed?
