However it does deviate from what "your" objectives are. But do you think
this is a viable possibility.

I think your approach differs substantially from our approach in
implementation details. However, I think we both need a common interface,
especially if we're both going to be hacking Geoserver. Hence, I think
there's significant opportunity for collaboration. Another potential
collaborator who has not yet been mentioned is Rob Atkinson. I believe
he's barking up this tree with the UK Met office right about now.
(ccing Rob so he doesn't miss this)

Interface questions:
+ what is the syntax to request a 2D slice of 4D data?
+ how will 4D extent be specified?
+ is there a spec for time strings coming from a WCS?
+ what is the behavior if a vertical slice is requested?

I think it even makes sense to use a "quick/short-term" solution to flesh
out the required interface while the long term solution is under
development.
From a naive perspective, that's about what I figured too. The data side you guys are doing is a bit hacky from the long term perspective, but the GeoServer interface should be the same, and your work would hopefully re-work what we've got to handle the next steps. So I'd say take care on the geoserver side of things, abstract out your data access and make sure that the actual WCS layer continues to work with the current 2D stuff as well as yours.

So, yeah, I think it's viable. :)
