Glad you are using free software! I'm unsure if you received any reply
to your posting so here's a status report. 

You are right that we lost all the gui code in the early release
candidates of 2.2. However, we have just added back a very simple GUI
which should clarify how things hold together. This is the class
JMapPane in the ext/mappane directory. We are currently trying to clean
this code up and provide a simple tutorial for its use.

Look for this code in the next release of the 2.2 branch!
