Hey Richard, Glad you got through the unit testing. ;-)
My understanding is that JMapPane is ready to go. It's not perfect but it's good enough to point users to as inspiration for their own gui code. It's also more than good enough for my documentation work. Please, when you release, check the javadocs that are generated to make sure that the links into GeoAPI point to v2.0 and *not* to trunk/2.1.
