I think Cory and Andrea started trying to move 2.2.x to use the normal maven javadoc:javadoc target ... but I am not sure how far they got. It was also unclear on the instruction page why the javadocs were to be generated from 2.2.x (rather then the 2.2.1 tag that had been created by this point in the release process).
