Given the amount of discussion the topic has received I feel it's ready for voting, but feel free to discuss it again if you need to. I'm cc'ing GeoServer too since to make everything work fine we'll have to switch all Logger.getLogger(xxx) calls to Logging.getLogger(xxx) in GeoServer code as well.
