I am obviously wrong in saying:
All 3D, other than ellipsoidal 3D, are compound 2D+1, a
vertical.
since the trivial 3D euclidean CRS is a known, commonly used CRS and is
not compound.
Today, Martin points out the right way to correct my (his) statement
would be along the lines of:
All 3D CRSs for which one could be expected to want to extract a
2D CRS representing an earth surface, other than the ellipsoidal
3D CRS, are compound 2D+1, the vertical.
which should be sufficiently correct for our needs in this case.
