Patches are well welcomed, provided you don't commit right away before asking permissiong to the module maitainer (that is, create a jira issue, attach the patch, and the module maitanier will review and commit). After a few of those patches, if the patches are ok of course, the maintainer will trust you enough to allow free reign for minor changes. For bigger ones, you either replace the maintainer, or you keep on asking ;) It's not like we have anything against you, but look at the library size and the number of people working on it... we just need some burocracy to keep things under control.
