okay, other than the fids Set seeming not to be initialized anywhere,

Interesting... I assume this is for a versioned table? do you have a stack 
trace?

wondering how to reproduce in a test case... may be creating two different 
ArcSDEDataStore instances fed with different pools hitting the same 
machine...
