Can we explore the ideas Andrea talks about above via email; and I am happy to help fix things tomorrow. I appologize if my words about Java 6 were strong; uDig also makes use of Java 6 and it would be nice to upgrade; you saw my bug report that "plain" Java 6 does not compile geotools right now (you need to install JAI and ImageIO).
