In case it helps, the canonical example I use for the 'analytic
coverage' is the geoid, which exists in every GPS unit, although
apparently with incorrect equations. The Geoid provides a way to
calculate, for every long/lat coordinate, a value (which happens to be a
distance from the mythical 'center of gravity').
