Ciao all,
just dumping a few thoughts about the subject after having discussed a
bit with all the involved parties.

I seem to understand that the goals for GeoTidy are (correct me if I am wrong):

- clean up metadata, referencing and possible all the rest
- use java 6

This implies that the metadata and referencing module are no longer
maintained besides:

- minor bug fixes which are easy to apply
- changes which keep referencing aligned with Geoapi

It also occurred to me that "GeoTidy" in the end should propose itself
as "GeoTools 3".

Assuming that this picture of the situation is correct, my thoughts
are as follows:

- I fully agree with the clean up goal
- I do not fully agree with the Java 6 goal, which is not yet the
standard for the JEE environment

However, at the moment, I see the following problems with this approach:

- it is essentially a unilateral move with no community consensus
- I do not see either a roadmap or a timeline or specific plan for
this work, which IMHO should have been the agreed starting point (but,
yeah, I do understand that anyone here has its own timings)
- it is quite unclear what will happen with the modules that are
curently maintained by the geotidy committers

These problems lead me to the following considerations:
- hoping this is not a move "against" the community, I think that it
is going to be difficult to have someone else join the effort without
plan/roadmap/timeline. We are asking for blind faith atm not for an
effort :-)
- on the same line as above, without plan/timeline/roadmap I see it
very difficult for geotidy to become geotools 3, but rather it just
seems a slow moving fork (of course I might be wrong) since it seems
quite difficult to me to call it geotools 3 if noone else will join
the effort (and withouth roadmap/plan/timeline who will join the
effort?)

My final consideration is that, the "geotidy" move could be a good
occasion ot clean things up and, assuming that it's not just a "nice
and gentle" way to fork, i would be willing to provide some efforts,
but IMHO without a plan/timeline/roadmap I see this as very unlikely
to happen.

Ciao,
Simone.
