Hello,

I'm forwarding this on behalf of Harald Wellmann, who posted this yesterday on the udig devel. (It was meant to be a cross posting, anyway.)

Hopefully Harald will be back soon to this list.

Cheers,

Ugo

Some of you may remember the discussion I raised last autumn about
getting rid of net.refractions.udig.libs and putting each library
required by uDig into its own OSGi bundle a.k.a. Eclipse plug-in.

I announced that we would branch off to develop a solution to match our
requirements, and we have now created the first release of our uDig
subset under the name of udigLite (including osgified subsets of
Geotools and GeoAPI).

More details on udigLite, binary packages, building from source and
changes we made can be found in the uDig Hacking wiki at

http://udig.refractions.net/confluence/display/HACK/udigLite+-+An+OSGi-f
riendly+subset

To get an idea of why we are doing all this and what we are building on
top of uDig, read the story in my blog:

http://hwellmann.blogspot.com/2009/03/anaconda-workbench-udig-applicatio
n.html

Let me repeat that I would be more than happy if this work would be
merged back into the uDig and Geotools mother projects rather sooner
than later.

For the time being, we will continue to work on our clones to have a
stable basis for our own application.

Everyone who is building applications on top of uDig and found himself
trapped in third-party dependency hell as we have is invited to have a
look at udigLite or volunteer to osgify additional libraries they might
need.

Best regards,

Harald
