Well, the fact that it works just fine in desktop apps and does not work as fine in GeoServer would make me think otherwise. And you're well aware that there are other issues in J2EE in general. So much for being GeoServer only. So, we don't need a shutdown method for desktop apps, we need something to clean up for _any_ web app. Please explain what you're missing, a generic statement that we care only about GeoServer is just serving to piss me off greatly, especially since I have zero need of a shutdown method for that, all the code I need is already in a GeoServer specific patch and if you don't like it I can keep it there.
