You. Reni had worked on some of the symbology encoding functions earlier; and they were used as a base for some of the "mapping" functions. One I did with her involved reading in a property for (or csv file?) and the function would look up a value in the file ...
The same approach could be used to do a "join" between a CSV file and a shapefile ...
