I am also a bit confused as to why in the binding classes they are
mapped to different types.
Sorry, I don't quite understand the question.
Check the following files:
modules/extension/xsd/xsd-gml3/src/main/java/org/geotools/gml3/bindings/CurvePropertyTypeBinding.java
modules/extension/xsd/xsd-gml3/src/main/java/org/geotools/gml3/bindings/MultiCurvePropertyTypeBinding.java
And Check the method "getType()", you'll see what I mean.
