Your work to take advantage of the capabilities in a SQL DB sounds great, similar to ideas I have seen in the past about some conversion mechanism between Filters and Hibernate Spatial. I think those are good longer term solutions. I was just tossing out my idea as something that could improve the current structure and help in the short term because right now we cannot use the app-schema plugin due to the performance issues.
