Yes it is the gt-jdbc-h2 module that was failing for me. I successfully removed 
them manually and re-built. Still no luck.

Looked at source code. No the wiser.

I've gone back to a previous revision that I have had a succesful build and 
move forward from there.

Brett,

is this gt-jdbc-h2? This module is a bit naughty because it places test
database files in its module root, not in target like a well-behaved
maven module. This prevents their removal by "mvn clean".

The build is currently passing on my local machine and my group
buildbot; both build in a path with spaces.

If your gt-jdbc-h2 test databases have become corrupted, you can try
removing them  manually:
modules/plugin/jdbc/jdbc-h2/null.*.db

(I also have a .gitignore entry for these.)
