Basically it makes the dimension be treated as a first level information just like srid, and trust the database metadata instead of heuristics or particular coordinate sequence implementations inside a geometry. The patch is larger but rather mechanic besides the bits that read the dimension from the DB, in that it mimics 1-1 what we already do with SRID.
