Funny you ask about that, I've been working on a patch to make postgis
properly support 3d data in my spare time.

Don't know if the patch is good to be committed though, it's rather
mechanic, but at the same time large,
and the 8.x series is in RC mode already.
Hopefully other core developers will chime in and discuss both the patch
contents and the opportunity
to commit it now on trunk
