I had concerns also.

While not nuclear bomb-like, backwards compatibility came to mind.

Peter thinks this one is fine, I look at it and see a nuclear bomb ready to 
explode.

In order to upgrade this one we also have to upgrade the dependencies in 
GeoServer and GWC and make sure the upgrade path is smooth (the database format 
changed a few times and it's the reason why we haven't upgraded so far).

Not against it, but who's going to put the work to do all the tests and 
eventually perform code changes that might be required for a smooth transition?

I can already tell you it's not going to be automatic unless some code is
