Eh, each conversion is actually a new array allocation (assuming arraylists
around), if it's repeated a lot I'm not surprised that
would make for a lot of garbage in the heap...

But... unless we want to make a stab at proposing a change in OpenJDK (with
an API change included, it seems?) I guess
we'll have to live with it
