Hi Jay: If you mean by disarray the fact that StyledMapViewer is gone you are correct. We need users such as your self to step forward and maintain this sort of code - after three years of not being updated for CoordinateReferenceSystem the functionality was dropped.
We did make an example of how to do a user interface available; but providing a geospatial widget set is not in scope for the GeoTools project. You can of course check out http://udig.refractions.net/ as an example of a GeoTools based solution. GeoVista also uses GeoTools. If you would like to volunteer please drop by our weekly IRC meeting or sign up to the development email list. While I would personally like more developers available long term you may find that setting up a support contract with one of the developers a cheaper way to go.
