I started working some with 2.5M2 yesterday, and initially I'm getting some better results.  I'll provide more details as I get into it more. Oh...I did have some problems at first, where my call to ImageIO.write() kept getting the imageio that seems to be packaged as a gt2 extension (?).  I don't have GDAL SWIG bindings installed, and my code kept crashing as it was trying to load gdaljni.  I finally had to delete the imageio-ext-* jars to get it to stop doing that.  I'm using Netbeans 6, and it was not sufficient to just remove those jars in the NB library manager.  Maybe it's a Netbeans issue...
