Do you _only_ want to visualize your data ? If so, I'd suggest that rather than hacking your own code with GeoTools you use an off-the-shelf solution such as HYDRA (I've seen demos of this software with lidar data) http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/hydra/ Or do you want to do more than visualize the data ? (e.g. create grid coverages that will feed in to some other analyses) or you have existing GeoTools code that you are extending ?
