Yes, I think the flock of Envelopes in GeoTools confuses a lot of users.

And yes, GeoTools does seem to force one to write labyrinthine code at
times :-( In its defence, a huge amount of work has been (and
continues to be) done on the library in its 2.5 and 2.6 incarnations
to both add much requested features and to spring clean some of the
darker and dustier corners. I think that all this work will provide a
good foundation for a cleaner and more elegant API in GeoTools 3
("where everything is beautiful" - another Jodyism :) as will having
honest but constructive comments such as yours about all elements of
the library from the user community.
