I don't get null if I use the file TM_WORLD_BORDERS-0.2.zip from 
http://www.mappinghacks.com/data/ .

If it's not specified in the file, then perhaps it's best to assume 
DefaultGeographicCRS.WGS84 .

This value is however always set to null with the few shapefile I have tested 
(like for instance the world_borders.zip that can be found here 
http://www.mappinghacks.com/data/)
Is there another way to retrieve it ? Isn't it included in the shapefile 
standard ?
