Even if the AUTO stuff hates you and does not work it gives you the idea of 
generating your own WKT and then parsing it using the CRS wkt method.

Yeah; I do something the other way (going to WGS84) in order to figure out 
which way is north when drawing a compass arrow.

You are working on coordinate reference stuff; it is always difficult; being 
new has nothing to do with.

In fact being able to use a library rather then sort this stuff out is one of 
the major advantages of using open source for science/math stuff like this.
