Hi Endru and Richard; If this is actually slowing you down you may wish to talk to Anrdrea's employer and get a quote. Andrea does a heck of a lot here on his own time, but I do also recommend hiring him - indeed my employer has had occasion to work with OpenGeo and Andrea and would be happy to provide a reference.
The other approach is to assemble a test case showing the problem, in the hopes of making the problem easier to fix. This is a bit more difficult since it is environment specific. I would not expect much progress until after the foss4g conference since almost all volunteer time in the developer community is going towards conference prep.
