Hmmm, I would swear I took the image generatin program from the geotools wiki.
Well, if I didn't, we can get it from jgrasstools, we have one there
which obviously is all geotools.

Let's chat about it in IRC and I can supply you the snippet for the docs.

@Andrea: we are doing overlays of several rasters adnd vectors to
produce tiles to have a more lightweight format to serve data on.
Since yesterday uDig is able to read such tile folders, which becomes
very handy on mobile devices as on geopaparazzi and BeeGIS on netbook,
since they suffer from raster disease :)
