Are you sure its the litmitation of the shapefile and not the geotools ??
Because I have been using shapefiles where the geoemtry was stored in the
'Shape' column and not 'the_geom' column ?

But anyway, the naming of the column is not that important. The problem is
that the writer is not copying the geometry if the source keeps it in the
column whose name is NOT 'the_geom'.

And here I would be grateful for any help in solving the problem.
