The ESRI UC attendance is a good surrogate. I would figure that about 1 in 10 US GIS professionals attend the UC each year.
The UC is a good surrogate because: 1. Attendees are generally GIS professionals - not just people who use GIS as part of their profession 2. Even hard-core ESRI users use other software occasionally - especially Python. And people who normally use other software sometimes attend the UC. I say 1 in 10 because there are likely some shops that send most of their GIS professionals and many shops that send almost none. ESRI claims 12,222 attended in 2008.
