Also relevant to Eric Wolf's disseration ideas. We've had a lot of
success at O'Reilly tying together distributed systems with RESTful
services and RDF/XML payloads. Now, we're not doing anything with
geographic data (yet!), but it has long seemed to me that
1. Indexing strategies in XML databases seem to be better for geodata
than relational databases
2. An inference engine could essentially provide a way to handle
coordinate systems and projections in a distributed environment.
[I got a long way toward integrating county agencies with DB2 + Spatial
Extender, but to leverage spatial joins I had to register all the
geometry first. That was straightforward for one county's worth of
data, but it made me wonder how I could break the siloed approach.]
